Readers find the rind

Pickled watermelon rind may be somewhat of an oddity in these parts, but readers still found it for C.H. Limberg.

Dean B. Pomerantz has purchased pickled watermelon rind at Smith’s at 2540 S. Maryland Parkway. “It’s by the other pickled products.” Valerie Hawkes also suggested Smith’s, which sells the Old South brand.

And E.P. Fernandez suggested visiting the Old South Web site at www.oldsouth.com or calling (800) 634-2413. It’s available there in cans, two different sizes of jars or by the case. …

Anna Lou de Stefano, who is looking for foot-long hot dogs, can find them at Larry’s Great Western Meats, 420 S. Valley View Blvd., e-mailed Hazel Pennington, who added that they’re Hoffy brand. For the buns, she suggested Wal-Mart at 4505 W. Charleston Blvd.

“Smart & Final carries foot-long hot dogs made by Farmer John and called the ‘Dodger Dog’ because it is the one made for that ball team and sold at their games,” e-mailed Carl Taylor. “They come in a 5-pound box. As for the buns, sometimes they have them, but will order if requested.” Taylor added that he shops at the store at 4213 Boulder Highway.

And Aaron Mantz said Dodger Dogs are available at Vons. …

For Sheila Gordon, Mantz e-mailed that No Salt salt substitute is available at Vons at 4610 W. Sahara Ave. Jack E. Balaun suggested Vons at 2511 Anthem Village Drive in Henderson. And Ellene Hohmann suggested Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market at 6151 W. Lake Mead Blvd. …

For M. Walton, Leah Winch e-mailed that the gazpacho at Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba at Fashion Show mall, 3200 Las Vegas Blvd. South, is the most authentic she has found locally. …

For Bev Greer, who is looking for cherry-vanilla ice cream with large Bing cherries, Evelyn Mayfield e-mailed: “The best is Breyer’s. They have lots of large pieces of cherries, some almost whole. Food 4 Less and Albertsons carries it. They don’t advertise or list them as Bing cherries, but if they are not, they are so close most folks wouldn’t know the difference.”

And William Isaac e-mailed, “Häagen-Dazs makes a very good cherry-vanilla ice cream that is full of Bing cherries,” noting that it’s available in supermarkets and drugstores in the valley. …

For Cindy Hickam, Mayfield said, “maple-walnut syrup for ice cream became too hard to find, so I made my own.” She suggests filling a jar with a tight-fitting lid half-full of nuts, adding maple syrup to cover by about an inch and letting it age a week. “Delicious,” she said. “You can make large batches and it’s cheaper in the long run.” …
