Chinese food with a hint of New York

Ah, how we remember the foods of youth. That’s no doubt the case for Jack De Michele, who is looking for suggestions for a restaurant that serves New York-style Chinese food “where the owners come from the Canal Street area in New York.”

Which led, as these things tend to do, to a bit of debate. Ron Hirschkind emailed that the best restaurants were “not on Canal Street, more like Mott Street, Doyer Street, etc.,” and at any rate recommended Fair View Chinese Cuisine at 1930 N. Decatur Blvd., where he likes the “spare ribs, egg roll (not spring roll) made crispy, chow mein and basics.”

Kathy Coty, who’s from Niagara Falls, N.Y., likes Krazy Buffet at 3131 N. Rainbow Blvd.; she notes that there’s another Krazy Buffet at 8095 W. Sahara Ave. Shirley E. Kehrer is a fan of Great Wall Chinese Restaurant at 2202 W. Charleston Blvd. (where she also noted that the egg rolls are not spring rolls and that the fried rice doesn’t contain peas and carrots) and Mike Hamerling recommended New York Chinese Restaurant at 3545 S. Fort Apache Road and 9430 W. Lake Mead Blvd. …

For Gary Taylor, who’s looking for Aunt Jemima frozen waffles, Jenifer Briles and Marilynn Homan recommended WinCo, with Homan adding that the stores carry several varieties. WinCo stores are at 6101 N. Decatur Blvd. and 80 N. Stephanie St. in Henderson …

For Lawrence Levin, who’s looking for a local source for date-nut bread, Bonnie Brown of China Ranch Date Farm and Bakery, which is 90 minutes from Las Vegas, emailed that her husband sells their bread, cookies, muffins, dates and date candies at the Bet on the Farm Market from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursdays at the Springs Preserve, 333 S.
