Careful search uncovers Clark Bars
Clark Bars — a candy beloved by classicists — are tough to find in Las Vegas these days, but readers have a few ideas for Polly Esposito.
“Believe it or not,” Rite Aid at 1815 E. Flamingo Road carries the individual bars, e-mailed Heidi Janesin. She added that she has found boxes of Clark Bars at Smart & Final at 1435 E. Tropicana Ave.
Mary K. Gabrik e-mailed that the Wal-Mart Supercenter at 8060 W. Tropical Parkway “brings the miniatures in as soon as the Halloween candy comes out. You need to grab them fast. Once they’re gone, they’re gone.” Terry Tefertiller also suggested Wal-Mart during the Halloween season.
Gabrik also recommended www.timelesscandy.com (or call 800-778-9615).
And Eve Altman suggested that source for all things old-fashioned, Vermont Country Store, which can be reached at www.vermontcountry store.com (or call 802-362-8460), as well as www.oldfashioned candy.com (or call 619-216-0116). …
For Esther Lynn, who is looking for Bing cherry preserves, Janesin suggested Cost Plus World Market, which has four locations in the valley. “Many times these ‘odd’ items can be found at Cost Plus and are generally produced in Europe and imported. Check there for gooseberry preserves also,” Janesin noted. …
For Myron Glassford, who is looking for a Midwestern-style pork-tenderloin sandwich in the southeastern part of the valley, numerous readers suggested the Hot Rod Grille at 1231 American Pacific Ave. in Henderson. “One of the owners grew up in Iowa and really knows his tenderloins,” e-mailed Dorothy Hubbard. The Hot Rod Grille also was suggested by Karen Crowe, Joan Swanson, Janet Tonelli and Stephanie Willis.
Tonelli also suggested Max Betts’ Funhog Ranch at 495 E. Twain Ave., but added, “it’s best to call before going there because the kitchen isn’t always open.” …
More on Chicago-style roast-beef sandwiches: Jim Handler recommended Chicago Hot Dogs, 1078 N. Rancho Drive.
Antoniette’s Deli, 3275 W. Ali Baba Lane, “has great Chicago beef sandwiches served with hot giardiniera,” e-mailed Jim Gonzales. …
More on chocolate Klondike bars: Joe D’Elia e-mailed to say he recently bought some at the commissary at Nellis Air Force Base. Of course, that’s only an option to those with commissary privileges. …
Reader requests: Tonelli is looking for GoLightly chocolate-covered peanut-flavored hard candy. …
Raymond Wright is looking for a local source for Emeril’s Essence. …
Nyla Williams is looking for mustard pickles, garlic sausage and tortilla mix. …
Larry Schmitt is looking for a local source for Totopos Mas Grande Corn Chips, which he has only had when someone brought them back from Mexico. …
And Dottie Manz is looking for jalapeno cheese corndogs — similar to those sold at 7-Eleven — to prepare at home.
