CINEVEGAS SCHEDULE

The ninth annual CineVegas film festival concludes Saturday in the Brenden Theatres at the Palms, 4321 W. Flamingo Road. Tickets are $10 per screening. Information and tickets are available online at www.cinevegas.com, by telephone at (888) 883-4278 or at the box office inside the Palms.

The screening schedule:

TODAY

1 p.m. “In the Land of Merry Misfits” — John Waters narrates this comedic romp about a guy, desperate to save his future, who takes a shortcut through a mystical tunnel and becomes stranded in an alternate universe.

1:30 p.m. Short films: Nevada Filmmaking — Local filmmakers train their lenses on Glitter City.

3 p.m. Half-Life Award: Charlize Theron — Conversation with the Oscar-winning actress, plus clips from the upcoming “Ferris Wheel,” which she produced and stars in — with CineVegas’ own Dennis Hopper.

4 p.m. Short films 3: Still Lives — Portraits of memorable characters.

6 p.m. Marquee Award: Anthony Hopkins — Conversation with the Oscar-winning actor, plus a screening of “Slipstream,” which Hopkins wrote and directed, about a screenwriter (played by Hopkins), trying to separate real from reel.

6:30 p.m. “Penelope” (U.S. premiere) — Christina Ricci stars in a contemporary fairy tale about the daughter of wealthy parents (Richard E. Grant, Catherine O’Hara) afflicted by a disfiguring family curse.

7 p.m. “Mr. Untouchable” — The documentary focuses on gangster Leroy “Nicky” Barnes, who brought boardroom strategy to the heroin trade in ’70s Harlem.

9 p.m. “On the Road with Judas” — A New York businessman leads a double life as a computer thief in this Sundance success.

1:30 p.m. Short films 3 — See 4 p.m. today.

2 p.m. Vanguard Director Award: Mike Newell — Conversation with the director of “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Donnie Brasco” and “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” plus clips from the upcoming “Love in the Time of Cholera.”

4 p.m. “Penelope” — See 6:30 p.m. today.

4:30 p.m. “Chávez” — A documentary portrait of one of Mexico’s favorite sons, boxer Julio César Chávez.

5 p.m. Vanguard Actor Award: Ben Kingsley — CineVegas honors the Oscar-winning star of “Gandhi,” “Schindler’s List,” “Sexy Beast” and CineVegas’ closing-night attraction, “You Kill Me.”

7 p.m. “You Kill Me” — Ben Kingsley stars in a black comedy about an alcoholic hit man trying to sober up — by getting a job in a mortuary.

7:30 p.m. “Phantom Love” — This surreal drama traces a woman’s liberation from a web of family ties.
