Las Vegas’ Neon Museum announces plans to expand, relocate
The famed Neon Museum announced on Wednesday that it is relocating and moving to the Arts District in downtown Las Vegas.
According to a news release, as part of the relocation the Neon Museum intends to nearly triple the size of its current location.
The museum said it will “conduct due diligence on two sites,” with the first location being a 60,000-square-foot outdoor display space that also will feature 47,000 square feet for an indoor area on the ninth and 10th floors of a proposed parking garage.
A second location is located a short walk away with 35,000 square feet of programmable space, the museum said.
“Neon is Las Vegas’ native art form and the Neon Museum is an iconic attraction. We are excited that the museum will soon be a part of our vibrant 18B Las Vegas Arts District,” Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman said of the museum’s plans to relocate.
The Neon Museum, founded in 1996, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to collecting, preserving, studying and exhibiting iconic Las Vegas signs for educational, historic, arts and cultural enrichment, according to information from the museum. Three years ago, it received accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums.
The Neon Museum’s current 2.27-acre campus features an outdoor exhibition space called the Neon Boneyard; the North Gallery, home to the immersive audiovisual experience “Brilliant!” that uses technology to re-illuminate more than 40 non-operational signs; and its visitors center inside the former La Concha Motel lobby.
The museum’s collection also includes 14 restored signs installed as public art in downtown Las Vegas.
