Police investigating officer-involved shooting in southwest Las Vegas

What started as a routine arrest on Saturday turned into the Metropolitan Police Department’s seventh officer-involved shooting when a robbery suspect tried to drive away from a convenience store in the southwest valley, police said.

A detective fired, striking the suspect at least once, at about 12:30 a.m. after he had stopped for gas at the store near Blue Diamond Road and Valley View Boulevard

The suspect was wanted in connection with a recent string of armed robberies. Detectives with the department’s major violators unit had been conducting surveillance on him, police said in a news release.

Police said the suspect initially complied with orders to get down on the ground. But then he jumped back into his car and attempted to flee, and the detective fired.

The suspect was taken to University Medical Center, where he was in stable condition.

A woman in the front passenger seat was not injured, but police said she was taken into custody. They did not immediately say if she is a suspect in any of the eight robberies over the last two weeks.

Police also found a firearm in the vehicle.
