Teen arrested in security guard’s death also brought gun to Las Vegas school

Anthony Okelberry (Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department)

The teen suspect arrested Saturday in the killing of a security guard this month was the same 16-year-old student arrested Thursday after bringing a handgun to Del Sol High School, according to Las Vegas police.

A 9mm semi-automatic handgun was found in Anthony Okelberry’s waistband Thursday, when Metropolitan Police Department detectives picked him up at the school on a warrant for a fraud charge. The charge is what linked the teen to 75-year-old Hursey Dale Addison’s death on April 22, police said.

Addison was shot in the head while patrolling an apartment complex on the 5500 block of South Mountain Vista Street. Police said he was unarmed.

On Monday, Metro said Okelberry also was found with some of the security guard’s belongings.

Police did not further elaborate, but Okelberry faces a charge of possession of a credit card without the cardholder’s consent among other charges, including murder, robbery with a deadly weapon, burglary and possession of a dangerous weapon on school property.

No threats were made last week to Del Sol High School when the handgun was found, according to Clark County school police Sgt. Bryan Zink.

More details on the case were not immediately available. The Las Vegas Review-Journal requested the teen’s arrest report.

School police have confiscated 15 guns from students this school year as of Thursday, Zink said.

On Wednesday, a 15-year-old student was arrested at Chaparral High School after police found a gun in his backpack, and a 13-year-old student was arrested for making terroristic threats to Silvestri Junior High School.

A status check is set for Wednesday morning in Las Vegas Justice Court, records show.
