Roommate arrested after homicide in east Las Vegas Valley

Updated September 15, 2020 - 7:49 pm

Police arrested a 30-year-old man accused of fatally stabbing his roommate Monday night in east Las Vegas.

Christian Yates was arrested on suspicion of murder after police received a 911 call about 9:30 p.m. Monday from Yates’ sister, who told police Yates had admitted to the crime, which happened in an apartment in the 3800 block of Mountain Vista Street, near Twain Avenue and Boulder Highway, according to an arrest report from the Metropolitan Police Department.

Yates called the police himself about an hour later and said he had killed Bobbie Wingate in self-defense Sunday and hadn’t called the police yet, according to the report. When Yates came out of the apartment, he was holding a machete, had a folding knife in his pocket and refused to speak with police.

Police said they found Wingate lying on the ground in a pool of blood with a blanket over him, and he appeared to have stab wounds.

Homicide detectives believe Yates “stabbed his roommate due to an ongoing dispute,” the report states.

Police interviewed Yates’ sister and mother, who said he had been discussing killing his roommate weeks ago and claimed that Wingate had tried to sexually assault him, according to the report.

Yates was booked into the Clark County Detention Center, where he remained Tuesday without bail, jail records show.

Wingate’s cause and manner of death will be released by the Clark County coroner’s office pending notification of kin.
