Armed man dies after being struck by police vehicle; woman fatally stabbed
A man who was suspected in the fatal stabbing of a woman in west Las Vegas died after police officers used a patrol vehicle to strike him on Tuesday morning.
Officers responded to a report at 10:48 a.m. of a woman being stabbed, and a man stabbing himself, at an apartment complex on the 8800 block of Canyon Rim Way, the Metropolitan Police Department said in a news release Tuesday.
Officers arrived at the complex, near West Desert Inn Road and El Capitan Way, to find the woman suffering from apparent stab wounds, police said. She was taken to University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
Police said a fire had also been set in an apartment.
Other officers arrived to find the man, armed with a knife, on West Desert Inn Road near El Capitan Way. The man began walking toward occupied vehicles, police said.
“So, in order to de-escalate the situation, when the officers arrived, the male was standing in the roadway of Desert Inn and El Capitan Way,” Metro Capt. Joshua Martinez said in a news briefing at the scene Tuesday.
“And he was armed with a knife. So they used their vehicle to strike the individual, which was able to get him down to the ground, and they were able to take him into custody,” he added.
The man who was struck by the police patrol vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Police didn’t identify the man or woman, nor provide their ages. Their identities will be released by the Clark County coroner’s office.
The identities of the officers involved will be released after 48 hours, police said.
An earlier version of the headline on this story misidentified the manner of the woman’s death.
