14-year-old charged in fatal shooting of younger brother, Henderson police say

A 14-year-old boy is in custody after police say he fatally shot his 10-year-old brother on Wednesday morning.

The Henderson Police Department said they were called to the 100 block of Sicily Hills Court at 9:13 a.m. after a reported shooting. Officers found the 10-year-old suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives determined the 14-year-old had shot his brother, police said, and he was booked on one count of involuntary manslaughter. Neither boy was identified by police on Wednesday afternoon.

Around 4:15 p.m., officers were still investigating at 193 Sicily Hills in an otherwise quiet cul-de-sac. Toys sat on the front porch, and the family’s dog was in the backyard.

Several pieces of furniture, including a TV, were being removed from the two-story home.

Later, three cars pulled into the driveway within a 30-minute span.

Down the street, children played in a small neighborhood park.

Rebekah Joachim lives nearby and was walking with son Cameron.

“I can’t even imagine what they’re going through,” Joachim said. “If that ever happened to me, I don’t know what I would do.”

She said she doesn’t know the family but said her father saw police cars and the area taped off Wednesday morning.

“I was really shocked because stuff like that doesn’t happen in your neighborhood,” Joachim said.

By 5:15 p.m., police had left the residential neighborhood.

Another resident, Donald Howsley, has lived in the neighborhood for three years and said he was home all day but didn’t see or hear anything out of the ordinary.

This afternoon he saw a headline about a shooting in Henderson.

“I didn’t realize it was around the corner here,” Howsley said.

He said “a fair amount” of children of various ages live in the neighborhood and play outside or at the nearby park.

“People need to be a lot more careful,” Howsley said. “If you have a firearm in your house, you got to keep it locked up.”
