1 dead in shooting at apartment complex

A man was shot dead Tuesday evening after police said he confronted a group of taggers at a Las Vegas apartment complex.

Shortly after 6:30 p.m., multiple 911 callers reported hearing “several” gunshots in the area of Tropicana Avenue and Duneville Street, just east of Tropicana and Jones Boulevard, Metropolitan Police Department homicide Lt. Dan McGrath said.

Minutes later at Sedona Ridge apartments, 4975 Duneville St., arriving officers found a man — about 18 to 20 years old — who had been shot multiple times.

Medical crews rushed him to University Medical Center’s trauma unit, where he died about 40 minutes later.

Police said the shooting may have been gang-related. The group the man confronted had been spray-painting gang graffiti on a wall in the Sedona complex.

It’s unclear what the man said to the group, but McGrath said footage at the complex shows the group charging the man after the confrontation — chasing him then shooting him at least three times in the complex parking lot.

The man shot had no record of gang ties.

The suspects drove from the scene in what police described as a dark, four-door Honda Civic. As of Tuesday night, no suspects were in custody.

At the time of the shooting, the man killed had been with a young girl. It’s unclear how the man and the girl knew each other, but McGrath said the girl was uninjured.

The county coroner’s office will name the man killed once his family has been notified.
