Henderson police officer arrested on suspicion of domestic battery

A Henderson police officer was arrested Thursday on suspicion of domestic battery.

Tyler Travers, 29, was booked Thursday into the Henderson Detention Center, where he faces one misdemeanor count of first-degree domestic battery, according to a statement from the Henderson Police Department. Travers was hired by the department in December 2017.

While the announcement of Traver’s arrest came Thursday evening, he was booked into the detention center about 10 a.m., jail records show. Further details about his arrest were not available Thursday.

Henderson Police Chief Thedrick Andres said Thursday evening that Travers’ firearm and “credentials” were taken away. He was placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an administrative investigation, the department said.

Travers remained in the jail Thursday night with a $3,000 bond, jail records show. His arraignment is scheduled for Jan. 16, according to Henderson Municipal Court online records.

The confiscation of Travers’ gun comes after Henderson City Council members in October voted unanimously to let the city circumvent a state law that bars domestic abusers from having guns.

The Henderson law came after the Nevada Supreme Court ruled in September that, because state law could affect a defendant’s Second Amendment rights, domestic violence is a serious enough offense to warrant a jury trial.

But municipalities like Henderson have said they lack the infrastructure and means to carry out jury trials in those cases. The cities of North Las Vegas and Las Vegas passed similar ordinances in October saying the cities will prosecute misdemeanor domestic violence cases without requiring those convicted to give up their firearms.
