Man dies, woman injured in shooting at apartment complex

A man died from multiple gunshot wounds and a woman was wounded Saturday at a Las Vegas apartment complex after a confrontation with several men who got out of a compact car, exchanged words with the victims and then opened fire, Las Vegas police said.

Homicide Lt. Lew Roberts said the shooting happened at 1:08 p.m. at the Evergreen Apartments, 5400 W. Cheyenne Ave., near Michael Way.

The woman, who was wounded in the foot by a bullet from a handgun, was taken to University Medical Center for surgery “and is expected to live,” Roberts said.

“All we know at this point is that the victim, male, and the female victim exited their apartment. Apparently they were walking out to empty some trash,” he said.

Roberts said he didn’t know the ages of the victims; their names were not released.

He said police found the male victim “in the grassy area of one of the apartment buildings. He was deceased from multiple gunshot wounds.”

One man at the scene, Jerry Watkins, said he “came around the corner and he was just lying there.

“I was the first on the scene and I tried to do CPR on him, but he was shot a bunch of times,” said Watkins, who appeared drained and shaken by the ordeal.

Roberts said police have only a vague description of the gunmen who fled the complex in a silver or white, four-door compact vehicle.

“I wouldn’t say it’s gang related or a confrontation with neighbors at this point,” he said. “Anybody that’s been in and around the area knows there’s a lot of foot traffic around here. …The suspects may or may not live in the area, most likely they probably don’t.”

He said this was the second homicide Las Vegas police have investigated this year.

Roberts said police hope to learn more from the female victim.

“We will talk to her and see what we will deduce from her, but there’s nothing at this point,” he said .

About 50 yards away, investigators used about a half dozen small pink cones to mark a trail of evidence that led toward an apartment complex parking area.

“It doesn’t appear to be a drive-by” shooting, Roberts said.
