Hearing set for man wounded by Henderson police

Tony Allen McNeill faces six felony charges stemming from a Dec. 26 confrontation, including three counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

At McNeill’s initial court appearance Monday, Henderson Justice of the Peace David Gibson denied his request to be freed without posting bail pending further court hearings.

Gibson assigned the unemployed man’s case to the Clark County public defender’s office.

McNeill, 54, is being held at the Clark County Detention Center.

He was reported to be suicidal when he aimed a .22-caliber rifle at a trio of Henderson police officers while standing in front of the condominium on Racetrack Road near Boulder Highway that he has lived in with his parents for more than 15 years.

McNeill didn’t fire at the officers — identified as John Bellow, Kevin Perkins and Christopher Gerhard — but police said he pointed the rifle at them before they fired at him, leading to the assault charges. He also faces three felony counts of discharging a firearm into a structure.

His mother, Charlene McNeill, 75, called police after her son fired at least one round into his bedroom floor and another into the living room ceiling.

McNeill suffered a chest wound and was hospitalized about three weeks.

His mother told the Las Vegas Review-Journal shortly after the shooting that her son said he either would kill himself or police would kill him.

She said that he had been despondent after losing a job because of a disabling injury, and that he had received mental health treatment for more than two decades. She said her son broke off visits to his mental health care providers in the weeks before the confrontation.

The three officers were placed on routine paid administrative leave after the incident. They since have returned to work to perform desk duty, a police spokeswoman said.
