First revamped inquest set for mid-July
The first inquest under the revamped process will be held on July 12 and 13, two weeks later than the previously-announced date, officials said Friday.
There has not been an inquest since Clark County commissioners last year imposed a slew of changes, most notably the introduction of an ombudsman with the ability to ask questions of witnesses.
Inquests are fact-finding process held after every police-involved death.
Next month jurors will hear the case of Benjamin Hunter Bowman, 22, who was fatally shot by police as he held a knife to the throat of a bartender at PT’s Pub in November. Instead of ruling whether the shooting was justified, excusable or criminal, jurors will only determine basic facts, such as how, when and where Bowman died.
The inquest will be held at 8 a.m. in the Regional Justice Center. The courtroom has not been determined.
