California man arrested after fatal crash near Strip
A San Diego man suspected of driving under the influence was arrested Sunday morning after his vehicle rear-ended another car on Tropicana Avenue near the Strip, killing one woman and injuring another, Las Vegas police said.
Police said driver of the vehicle that was hit, 55-year-old Cynthia Konarksi of Las Vegas, was critically injured in the collision. The identity of her passenger, a 21-year-old woman who died at the scene, was not released by authorities. Police said she was from Dearborn Heights, Mich.
Edris Ghani, 32, was arrested on suspicion of being impaired while driving, police said.
The collision occurred about 4:04 a.m. on Tropicana, west of Duke Ellington Way, police said. Konarksi was traveling west on Tropicana in a 2004 Mercury Sable, and Ghani was directly behind her in a 2009 Mercedes-Benz CLS 550. Police said Ghani failed to reduce his speed and collided with the Sable.
Ghani and his passenger, 26-year-old Shakeeb Azizi of Temecula, Calif., were uninjured.
The collision remains under investigation. The woman’s death is the 77th traffic fatality this year under the jurisdiction of Las Vegas police.
