Four Seasons to launch $30 million renovation

This is the closest you may ever get to being able to walk inside of a Chanel handbag.

Just inside the hotel suite inside Four Seasons Las Vegas, a shiny, black quilting pattern graces the front of a credenza. Beyond that, rich cream-colored chairs are accessorized with silver studded edges. Silver interlocking C’s cover the bar mirror and the snack tray features a silver latch design from a Chanel handbag.

Nods to the Coco Chanel aesthetic – simplicity, black and white, quilting, beads – can be found throughout the new room designs at the Four Seasons.

Sunday marks the first day of the $30 million renovation project at the 424-room, AAA Five-Diamond hotel. The Four Seasons, which sits adjacent to Mandalay Bay and shares a hotel tower with the gaming property, encompasses the top five floors of the Mandalay Bay’s room tower, levels 35-39.

The first piece of the renovations, the hotel rooms, will be completed one floor at a time, at a rate of about 86 rooms per floor. Phase one is expected to be completed by mid-December. All of the furniture and design pieces to be featured in the new rooms were manufactured specifically for the Las Vegas hotel.

“We’ve shown the room to a lot of guests and gotten a lot of positive comments on the stylization of the room, which is very important in the total experience these days,” said Mark Hellrung, general manager of the Four Seasons Las Vegas.

The property originally opened in 1999, so some of the upgrades are strictly to keep up with the technological times. Lamp bases, for instance, will feature multiple electrical plug-ins, and each TV cabinet is equipped with a data hub on one side. Bathroom lighting has been increased, with the addition of a task bar around the vanity mirror, which was a direct request from the hotel’s guests. The replacement of chain locks on room doors with an L-shaped bar design came from engineering department suggestions.

Once the rooms are finished, the second phase of the project will include a new lobby bar and outdoor seating underneath overhead trellises surrounded by fire pits in the garden area.

“Every year we put money into the hotel to maintain it and keep it up to Four Seasons standards, so there is an investment to keep it fresh and interesting along the way,” Hellrung said. “But, we’ve been open 13 years. It’s a good time to go in and really restylize the hotel and that’s what that room is doing.”

Other hotels have also renovated recently. Downtown’s Golden Gate, for instance, just completed its $15 million overhaul, and the Palms spent
$12 million to renovate the 428 rooms in the original hotel tower. Other recently updated hotels include MGM Grand, Bellagio and Riviera.

Year-to-date Las Vegas hotel occupancy in August was 88.4 percent, up from 88.1 percent in 2011, according to monthly visitor statistics produced by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

“Occupancy is back. In that regard we’re doing fine,” Hellrung said of his property’s rates.
