Judge Leavitt, meet Las Vegas Sands
Maybe Clark County District Judge Michelle Leavitt won some kind of strange lottery.
Earlier this year, her courtroom was tied up during a six-week trial in which Hong Kong businessman Richard Suen won a $58.6 million judgment from Las Vegas Sands Corp.
A jury found that Suen should have been compensated for helping the company win a Macau gaming license in 2002. The lawsuit was filed in 2004.
On Nov. 26, two shareholders sued the Las Vegas Sands board of directors, claiming the board’s mismanagement has caused the company’s stock price to tumble some 95 percent in the past 14 months.
Where did the lawsuit land in Clark County District Court? Judge Leavitt’s courtroom. But it may not remain on her docket.
A lawyer involved in the lawsuit said the case might be moved to the business court division. Also, the District Court is shuffling judicial caseloads after Jan. 1 so the case could end up in another department.
