In July 2010, ex-BART police Officer Johannes Mehserle was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Oscar Grant. He was sentenced to the minimum two years in prison and served about half of that time. His attorney successfully argued in court that Mehserle had meant to shoot Grant with a Taser and fired his pistol on accident – a claim that Grant’s family has never believed.
