Friendly Ford technician recommends scheduled maintenance
Of all of the potential automotive problems, ignoring a front-end concern or failing to get a routine inspection may be one of the most overlooked components of vehicle maintenance.
Jeff Matzie, a 26-year veteran technician with Friendly Ford, has seen his share of badly needed front-end alignments in his nearly three decades of working in the industry.
“The signs of a faulty front end components usually start with bad tire wear,” Matzie said. “Too many people overlook the front end when, in fact, an alignment is not that expensive.
“Front ends should be checked anywhere between 25,000 and 30,000 miles. Routine maintenance is very inexpensive, but repairs can run into thousands of dollars depending on the damage.’’
Matzie said that front ends change as the vehicle ages. The cost of an alignment is much less than the repairs, in most cases.
“Springs oftentimes settle down and can change alignment specifications,” he said. “As a vehicle gets older, owners should pay more attention simply because of common wear and tear.”
Also, a key factor that illustrates the need for front-end work comes when the vehicle begins to pull or wander. While it’s common wear and tear, it may also signal that it’s time for another alignment or inspection.
“The first thing that I do when all vehicles are brought to us is check the tire pressure,” Matzie said.
Another key element necessary is a road test to identify any issues such as pulling or wandering.
“We always drive it to make sure there are no loose components,” Matzie said. “Bad shocks can also be a big issue as evidenced by when a vehicle starts to bounce.”
Matzie also advised rotating tires every 5,000 miles.
Matzie could work most anywhere but remains with Friendly Ford. He is among several technicians who have been with the dealership for several years.
“I just enjoy working here,” he said. “If someone has an issue with a vehicle, I will do my best to fix it.”
