Fresno State’s late uprising sends Rebels to baseball loss

Kevin Viers hit a three-run homer to help Jimmy Lambert pick up his 10th win of the season as Fresno State notched a 7-2 victory over UNLV in a Mountain West baseball game Saturday at Wilson Stadium.
Lambert (10-0), a junior right-hander, held the Rebels (22-28, 12-14) to one run on five hits and two walks and struck out five in seven innings as the Bulldogs (35-17, 21-8) won their fifth straight and ninth in 10 games.
UNLV starter Kenny Oakley (4-7) matched Lambert for most of the game, until Fresno State struck for two unearned runs in the seventh inning to go up 2-1.
Korby Batesole hit a two-run single in the seventh after the inning was kept alive by a two-out error.
Viers’ homer followed an RBI double by Aaron Arruda in the eighth and gave the Bulldogs a 6-1 lead.
Oakley worked eight innings, giving up four runs — two earned — on eight hits and two walks and striking out eight.
Justin Jones had a double and an RBI single, and Cooper Esmay also went 2-for-4 for the Rebels, who were outhit 10-8 in losing for the fourth time in five games.
Jesse Medrano, Nick Warren and Scott Silva had two hits apiece for Fresno State.
