Wall watches Cousins make debut
Washington Wizards rookie guard John Wall, the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA draft, sat courtside during the first half Monday to watch former Kentucky teammate DeMarcus Cousins make his NBA Summer League debut with the Sacramento Kings.
Cousins, a 6-foot-11-inch center chosen with the fifth pick in the draft, had 14 points on 5-for-11 shooting along with 10 rebounds in 26-plus minutes as the Kings rolled to a 97-68 victory over the Detroit Pistons at Cox Pavilion. He also committed five turnovers.
There were ups and downs for Cousins, who threw down a thunderous dunk to give the Kings a 32-21 second-quarter lead, then was called for traveling on Sacramento’s ensuing possession.
Omri Casspi led Sacramento with 16 points. Tyrese Rice added 15 points in 18-plus minutes off the bench for the Kings, and Donte Greene scored 11.
Detroit rookie center Greg Monroe, the No. 7 pick in the draft, had had seven points, seven rebounds and four turnovers in 25-plus minutes.
Mac Koshwal had 10 points and 12 rebounds for Detroit, and teammates DaJuan Summers and A.J. Slaughter added 10 points apiece.
Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars was among those in the stands to watch Detroit play.
Spurs pull away from Pistons
In the opening game at the Thomas & Mack Center, Alonzo Gee and Tasmin Mitchell scored 12 points each to lead five Spurs in double figures as San Antonio downed Minnesota, 85-62.
The Spurs used a 28-16 edge in the fourth quarter to pull away.
Wesley Johnson, the No. 4 pick in the draft, scored 10 points in his debut for Minnesota.
Lazar Hayward led the Timberwolves with 13 points, and Jeremy Pargo chipped in 12.
