TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 – 1 mile, Purse $18,000, Claiming $10,000, 4-year-olds
1 Good Brother – The pace scenario favors a stalker who can save some ground; Victor Espinoza sits behind a wicked speed duel.
5 Warren’s Dove – Speedball gets P Val, say no more; sprinter stretching out should still have company on the front end.
Long Shot – 2 Dave’s Ruler
Race 2 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $28,000, Starter allowance $40,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
3 Ruby Lane – Don’t you like betting a horse that was basically eased in last?; her turf form is better than on synthetics.
5 The Great Atlantic – Tepid chalk in an open hillside test; outer post and tactical speed will help the strategy of Rafael Bejarano.
Long Shot – 4 Led Advantage
Race 3 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
8 Lutess – 7-for-7 in the money is a consistent resume, she refuses to win though; facing an extremely slow field tonight.
6 Catamaran Kate – FTS from Gary Stute hasn’t shown much in the a.m.; the key vote is seeing Joel Rosario taking the call.
Long Shot – 1 Miss Addy Kiss
Race 4 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $59,000, Optional claiming 462,500, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
5 Reba Is Tops – Gave a good account of herself in the grade 3 Monrovia; facing easier, albeit for a price tag.
7 Softly Singing – Like the outside posts down the hillside turf course; Rafael Bejarano clocks the speed, fires late.
Long Shot – 6 Bella Roja
Race 5 – 6 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, 3-year-olds
2 Rockin Harbor – He has been knocking on the door, but Rafael Bejarano refuses to give up; only a couple contenders to beat.
6 Requisition – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; expect improvement in second career start.
Long Shot – 7 Wild Gray
Race 6 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $18,000, Claiming $10,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
3 Million Town – Steve Sherman wins races in bunches up north; speedball will try to be the speed of the speed in here.
7 Lost Prophet – Claimed off a win for Mike Mitchell, hard to improve those kind; if she maintains her form, she’s right there.
Long Shot – 4 Irridescent Red
Race 7 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $56,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 4-year-olds and up
5 Bring It Home – Interesting long shot in a wide-open race; his best turf tries have come in Arcadia, fast enough to upset.
4 Dahoud – Tepid chalk in a real dart throw of a race; flattered when Smokey Lonesome won his next time out.
Long Shot – 1 Dubai You X Y Z
Race 8 – 1 mile, Purse $54,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies, 3-year-olds
6 Bathing Beauty – Garrett Gomez isn’t riding many, so pay attention when he’s legged up; back with her friends tonight.
8 Screaming Regal – Another choice exiting the much tougher Cal Breeders’ stakes; dead-late closer will need some help.
Long Shot – 9 Cookinthisorthat
Best Bet – 8 Lutess (race 3)
Santa Anita Park Thursday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/3/$21.40; Long Shots, 8/1/$10.20; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Park Totals – 282/76/$485.90; Long Shots, 140/19/$222.00; Best Bets, 16/8/$30.90
SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY – 3 Where’s Sterling (8/5) in race 2 at Gulfstream Park. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Thursday, Ronaldo won at Tampa Bay Downs paying $11.80 to win, $5.60 to place and $2.60 to show. Stats – 16/13/$104.50
