Horse Racing, Del Mar, Aug. 5
August 5, 2012 - 1:02 am
Today at Del Mar
Post Time 2:05 p.m.
Race 1 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $32,000, Claiming $16,000, 3-year-olds and up
1 Canook – This is one of the stronger looking ship and win horses; Dallas Keen can train, but his stock has to fit the condition book.
4 Bet On Victor – Claimed by Mark Glatt and spotted nicely to win; long shot jockey Agapito Deladillo gets a chance.
Long Shot – 3 Dance With Gable
Race 2 – 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 14 feet), Purse $73,000, Optional claiming $62,500, 3-year-olds and up
2 Temple’s Door – Sluggish run in the stretch last time when it counted; suspect he’ll be much tighter for this try tonight.
4 Fire With Fire – Finished fast last time to snatch second; ever notice how adept Rafael Bejarano is at winning photo finishes.
Long Shot – 6 Boxeur des Rues
Race 3 – 5 furlongs, Purse $28,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, Fillies, 2-year-olds
6 Cat’sdoubledaygirl – Another ship and win that looks to have a good chance; realistically spotted for a $30K price tag.
4 Ziraili – Beaten favorite in career debut; tepid chalk in a wide open race, key will be how heavy she is bet in the straight pool.
Long Shot – 7 Snackable
Race 4 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $70,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds and up
1 Caminetto – Lost to a very impressive colt Jimmy Creed from Richard Mandella; if he improves one step he’ll crush these.
5 Brother Francis – Gets class relief from grade 1 stakes; has talent but has loss after loss beaten up his psyche.
Long Shot – 6 Exultant
Race 5 – 1 mile, Purse $20,000, Claiming $8,000, 3-year-olds and up
8 Asset Play – Just missed as a ship and win horse last time out; drops to the bottom which can only help his chances.
4 Celestic Night – Bounced back last time after two moribund races in a row; flattered when Big Son of A Gun won on Saturday.
Long Shot – 3 Maximus Ruler
Race 6 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $70,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 2-year-olds
12 Mechaya – Has to draw in from the also eligible list; John Sadler sent out a killer baby named Capo Bastone on Saturday.
8 Magic Vixen – Have to include a Bob Baffert baby; one would feel foolish if Baffert beats you with a well bred 2-YO.
Long Shot – 10 Moulin de Mougin
Race 7 – 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 14 feet), Purse $71,000, Allowance, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
1 Miss Cato – Exits the grade 1 American Oaks joining the Edward Freeman barn; saves all the ground inside for Garrett Gomez.
3 Last Sting – Many will be scared off after being claimed by Melody Conlon; believe me, she is fast enough to get into the number.
Long Shot – 10 Deity
Race 8 – 6 1/2 furlongs, $150,000 Best Pal, 2-year-olds
3 Miss Empire – Filly facing males is to avoid Executiveprivilege on Wednesday; by Empire Maker, she will keep improving.
4 Scherer Magic – Logical chalk won the Hollywood Juvenile after being claimed by John Sadler; she won’t see a price tag ever again.
Long Shot – 5 Heir Kitty
Race 9 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $25,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up
11 Coranto – Claimed last time by Vann Belvoir; he is a good judge of talent as he’s made hay from many sharp claims.
5 Extra Fifty – Ran like a short horse last time off a 16-month hiatus; suspect will be much tighter for this second comeback race.
Long Shot – 13 Chicago Hero
Best Bet – 1 Caminetto (race 4)
Del Mar Saturday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 20/6/$33.40; Long Shots, 10/2/$16.60; Best Bet, 1/1/$5.20

SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY – #9 Input (3/1) in race 2 at Saratoga. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Saturday, Tritap won at Saratoga paying $6.90 to win, $4.10 to place and $3.30 to show. Stats – 120/85/$732.40; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
