Horse Racing, Del Mar, Aug. 12
August 12, 2012 - 1:02 am
Today at Del Mar
Post Time 2:05 p.m.
Race 1 – 1 1/16th miles (turf), Purse $40,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
3 K Js Maddog – Second best last time in a much improved effort; Jeff Mullins barn is really heating up now.
4 Full Dancer – Sharp win sprinting, now tries route and turf for the first time; has the pedigree to go a lot longer.
Long Shot – 5 Very Unusual
Race 2 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $70,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies, 2-year-olds
5 Cotton’s Point – Solid second as a maiden in a stakes last out; this is an easier spot, but she’ll be a much shorter price.
7 Sophie’s Secret – FTS from John Sadler with Rafael Bejarano up; Sadler babies have been tearing them up this meet.
Long Shot – 9 Boller Bomb
Race 3 – 1 mile (turf), Purse $71,000, Optional claiming $80,000, 3-year-olds
6 Ransom Canyon – Had to take the overland route in last turf route; the ground lost had to cost him any chance to win.
7 No Silent – Got the job done at 3/5 odds in MSW win; every turf try has been a good one, facing winners for the first time.
Long Shot – 3 Seventh Avenue
Race 4 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $70,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds
10 Code West – Not often can one get 6/1 on a Bob Baffert baby; he has an uncoupled entry in here so keep and eye on Cameo Appearance.
5 Caballo Del Cielo – Jeff Bonde FTS has earned the eyes of the clockers; the tote board should be singing on this bird.
Long Shot – 7 Outside Nashville
Race 5 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $24,000, Claiming $10,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
7 Woodman’s Lass – When Iggy Puglisi and Paul Aguirre get together you know they mean business; dangerous on the class drop.
11 Yer Woman – One Bill Morey ships to another Bill Morey in here; has been consistently good facing tougher up in NoCal.
Long Shot – 4 Magic Mama
Race 6 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $70,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
5 Princess Ash – Was flattered when Smart and Single crushed again on Saturday; figures to be her turn today.
4 Golden Production – Also exits the productive Smart and Single MSW; from Ron Ellis who is sending out only live runners this meet.
Long Shot – 12 My Bashert
Race 7 – 1 mile, Purse $71,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
5 Shaun Washington – Was never given a chance last time chasing a slow pace; expect Corey Nakatani to be more engaged tonight.
2 Oilisblackgold – He fits well with these, but is not big on winning races; tactical speed to sit a decent trip.
Long Shot – 11 Hurricane Lake
Race 8 – 1 1/8th miles (turf), $250,000 John C. Mabee, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
4 Nereid – This field looks as evenly matched as Saturday’s La Jolla; she has not been the same since winning the American Oaks.
3 Cambina – I can say the same for this filly because they dead-heated in the American Oaks; have they both been cursed since?
Long Shot – 1 All Star Heart
Race 9 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $36,000, Claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
2 Indycat – Ran like a short horse last time off a year hiatus; expect improvement tonight from this Mike Mitchell charge.
5 Real Housewife – Tepid chalk in another wide open affair; can improve in her second start off a 7-month sabbatical.
Long Shot – 12 Miss Oops
Best Bet – 6 Ransom Canyon (race 3)
Del Mar Saturday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 19/5/$43.00; Long Shots, 9/1/$9.60; Best Bet, 1/1/$2.60
Del Mar Totals – 313/85/$555.40; Long Shots, 159/18/$161.60; Best Bets, 17/10/$39.60
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY – #3 Gracefully Mean (3/1) in race 11 at Monmouth Park. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Saturday, Archwarrior was scratched at Saratoga. Stats – 122/87/$744.70; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
