First Best of Nevada Preps banquet set for Saturday

The last of the three high school sports seasons ended two weekends ago, but the Las Vegas Review-Journal isn’t looking past the 2015-16 school year just yet.

The inaugural Best of Nevada Preps banquet, featuring keynote speaker Bill Walton, will officially cap the high school sports year and recognize the top athletes and coaches from more than 100 schools and across 24 sports.

The event starts at 6 p.m. Saturday in the Summerlin Ballroom at Red Rock Resort.

Walton, who became a popular TV basketball analyst after 10 NBA seasons, will talk about his life on and off the court. He also will conduct a Q&A.

The 63-year-old Hall of Famer showed his excitement last week when speaking with Review-Journal sports columnist Ed Graney.

“I will never forget this night,” Walton said. “I am fired up. I’m ready to go. This is a celebration of life.”

More than 30 awards will be presented, including Top Male Athlete, Top Female Athlete and Coach of the Year. More than 800 athletes will be honored.

Registration for the public event has closed.
