World Cup betting: Belgium’s golden generation
June 16, 2014 - 10:16 pm
Las Vegas Review-Journal sports writers Adam Hill and David Schoen have been given $5,000 fantasy bankrolls to bet during the World Cup on either sides, totals or props. Below are their bets for today, with an explanation of their picks:
ADAM HILL, REVIEW-JOURNAL
Bankroll: $5,150
Monday: Won $210
Today: Betting $180
Bet 1: $180 on Russia (-.5, -120) over South Korea
Comment: Russia might struggle a bit in the midfield with the absence of Roman Shirokov, but former England manager Fabio Capello has plenty of healthy talent. This play is more about fading South Korea’s pathetic form heading into this tournament. This side has looked awful in its preparation games and the struggles should continue.
DAVID SCHOEN, REVIEW-JOURNAL
Bankroll: $4,825
Monday: Lost $50
Today: Betting $250
Bet 1: $250 on Belgium (-1, -125) over Algeria
Comment: This is a golden generation for Belgium that includes one of the English Premier League’s best young players (Eden Hazard) and the top goalie in Spain’s La Liga (Thibaut Courtois). The Red Devils are new to the big stage, but their attacking talent should break down an inexperienced Algerian defense.
