UNLV men’s golf team sixth after 36 holes at New Mexico event

Juniors John Oda and Shintaro Ban led the UNLV men’s golf team to sixth place Friday after 36 holes in the 54-hole, 16-team, two-day William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The Rebels are at 12-over-par 588, trailing first-place San Diego State by 15 strokes, second-place Colorado State by seven and third-place and four-time defending-champion New Mexico by five.

The Aztecs, at 3-under 573, are the lone team under par.

Oda is tied for eighth at even-par 144, and Ban is tied for 14th at 2-over 146 in the 92-player field.

Colorado State’s Blake Cannon, Brigham Young’s Rhett Rasmussen and San Diego State’s P.J. Samiere are tied for first at 4-under 140.

Also for UNLV, sophomore Harry Hall and freshman Justin Kim are tied for 38th at 6-over 150, and junior Ben Davis is tied for 54th at 8-over 152.

* WOMEN’S SOCCER: At Johann Memorial Field, Paige Simoneau had 12 saves to lead San Jose State (4-2-3) to a 2-1 win over UNLV (7-3) in both teams’ Mountain West opener. Lily Sender scored her fifth goal of the season in the 30th minute for the Rebels, who held a 21-7 edge in shots — including a 13-4 advantage in shots on goal. Darriell Franklin and Yaritza Arista scored in the opening nine minutes for the Spartans.

* MEN’S SOCCER: At Spokane, Wash., Colton Cavey and Jalen Crisler scored second-half goals to lift Gonzaga (6-2-1) to a 2-0 win over UNLV (2-7) in the Rebels’ final nonconference game of the season. The Bulldogs held a 14-12 edge in shots.

* CROSS COUNTRY: At San Diego, led by Spencer Moore’s third-place finish in 18:48.7, UNLV placed second in the seven-team Aztec Invitational, which was won by host San Diego State. Also for the Rebels, Angela Ziff (19:25.5) placed fifth, Sara Williams (19:34.3) eighth, Caitlin Amburgey (19:37.1) ninth and Kennedy Allen (19:43.3) 10th.

* WOMEN’S TENNIS: At Fertitta Tennis Complex, Carol Yang, Cristina Moroi and Jovana Kenic posted singles victories for the Rebels in the opening day of the three day UNLV Fall Invitational, which features competitors from Southern California, Long Beach State, South Alabama, Northern Arizona and Fresno State. In doubles, UNLV’s team of Yang and Aiwen Zhu advanced to the semifinals.
